My Book: In Association with Amazon.com

Comments

I enjoy hearing from my readers, whether they have comments, questions, or just want to drop a line and say they’ve enjoyed my site. If you would like to contact me, go here.

If I enjoy hearing from other people you might wonder why more commenting opportunities aren’t enabled on this website. The short answer is that I’ve had a bad experience with commenting. Past trouble with comment spam has made me aware of the dangers and hassles invovled in maintaining an open venue for commenting. For years I’ve kept my comments closed, but recently I have been toying with the idea of opening some of my material to comments again. I’m still wavering. For a time I opened comments on this one page for those who wished to leave a public note, but it seems my spam filtering software is not as good as it one was, because the amount of spam slipping through on just this one page became too much of a hassle.

For the present, if you can reach me via e-mail.

Your diatribe on mowing your field with your DR Brush Mower had me giggling with glee! My fiance and I are planning on purchasing a brush cutter in the next month and are vascillating between the DR and the Billy Goat Outback…I found your delightful story in a Google search, and though you didn’t have a lot of technical opinions on it, I thoroughly enjoyed every bit of it, and got some good information as well. I would love to hear your opinion on your DR. We’re thinking about the 17hp as we don’t want to end up buying two machines in the end…let’s just get the big one already and mow down everything!

I was giggy with laughter reading about your inner battles about what to save and what to mow…I am just a beginning gardener and planted lots of seeds with the expectation of a low rate of germination…darned if I’m getting nearly 100% poppage and a garden that’s clearly going to be too small! WHAT TO DO! WE MUST NOT KILL THEM!! LOL, it’s wonderful to see someone struggling with the same sort of dilemma.

Thanks for the laughs, and, if you have a moment to pass your judgement on your mower, I’d love to hear what you have to say! (Oh and pass me some of those blueberry muffins, will you?)

Hello Janet,

Glad you enjoyed my article. I have wanted to write a more technical review of the DR Brush Mower, but somehow I haven’t found the time, yet. I actually have written about the DR Mower previously. It still isn’t a complete technical analysis, but it will give you a better perspective. You can find this other writing here: http://www.coldclimategardening.com/essays/rundy/the-dr-brush-mower/

My concise judgment on the DR Mower is this: It is very effective. You should find the heavy duty 17hp to easily clear your scrub and mow down heavy grass, so long as you make sure you get the heavy duty brush blade. My warning would be that the 15hp and 17hp models of the DR Brush Mower are monster big and have a lot of power. A lot of women would find using the machine to clear brush an intimidating and exhausting experience. However, if your fiancĂ© will be the one doing the clearing, that issue wouldn’t be an impediment.

For years my DR Mower has demonstrated itself as power and durable (I haven’t had to do any major repairs yet, even after extensive use for several years). It does have some minor design weaknesses, but as they do not impair its ability to do the job, (and do it very well) the minor flaws don’t keep me from recommending the machine.

I have never used the Billy Goat Outback, so I can’t compare.

Hope that helps.
